Chapter Fourteen

The smile on Remy’s face was brighter than the sun itself and almost made me forget that he already knew what effect he had on me. As he walked closer, it only became more powerful. My knees got weak. My heart beat faster and my palms were sweaty from something besides the dry Texas heat.

Ten or so feet from me, the vampire I was quickly realizing I was falling for, slid his mirrored aviator sunglasses atop his head, capturing me with his sparkling violet gaze. Lost in his eyes, I only barely heard what sounded like two boards slapping together before Remy was crumbling to the ground.

Racing toward him as fast as I could on four-inch heels, Sampson left me in the dust as he flew by, snatched Remy off the ground, threw the unconscious attorney over his shoulder, and sped back to the limo. Making a U-turn as fast as humanly possible, I had taken maybe three steps before Sampson appeared out of nowhere, scooped me up, shouted, “Hold on,” and gently tossed me over his shoulder.

The ground was nothing but a blur and before I’d even had a chance to catch my breath, we were on the opposite side of the limo and my feet were once again on the ground. Opening my mouth to ask what the hell was going on, I never got to speak as the pinging sound of bullets bouncing off metal filled the air.

Rolling him over as Sampson sped from the airport, I was happy he hadn’t been wearing his jacket as I ripped open his shirt to get a better look at the wound.

Bright red blood flowed freely from a perfectly round hole the size of a quarter right through the left side of his chest. I was sure the bullet had missed his heart, but the way the blood continued to run like a tap opened wide, I was afraid something just as bad had been damaged.

“Why the hell isn’t he healing?” I screamed at Sampson. “I thought you guys had super everything.”

“The bullets were silver,” the giant growled. “Fucking bastards used silver.”

Holding on as tight as I could to one of the seatbelts as the limo went up on two wheels, I grabbed the shoe off my foot, ripping most of the bottom of my dress off, as I yelled, “Is there a vampire doctor, or nurse, or emergency room? Anything? He’s losing way too much blood.”

“We’re headed that way.”

Wadding the material from my dress into a ball, I climbed back to my knees the second
